Every kind of chocolate is harmful!

There is a substance named theobramine in the cacao that produces chocolate or rather chocolate, and it is this substance that causes poisoning in dogs. Theobramine is found not only in black or bitter chocolate, but also in all kinds of chocolate. For this reason, you should not give your dog any food such as chocolate, waffle, white chocolate or chocolate cake.

What is the toxic dose of theobromine?

The toxic dose for dogs of theobramine substance found in cocoa is 150 mg / kg. So poisoning occurs in a dog receiving 150 mg of theobramine per kilo.

Milk chocolate has 154mg / 100g, bitter chocolate has 528mg / 100g and pastry chocolate has 1365mg / 100g theobramine. So eating a slice of cake or eating a pack of chocolates can lead to poisoning of your dog.

Chocolate poisoning symptoms in dogs

Indications of poisonings that occur with the cause of theobromine substance found in chocolates in dogs are;
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Excessive thirst
  • Weakness
  • Agitation

If your dog has one or more of the above-mentioned symptoms, you should immediately contact your veterinarian. But I should not add that too; All of these manifestations occur in poisonings caused by different substances and in some diseases. For this reason, these symptoms do not necessarily indicate that your dog is poisoned from chocolate. But in any case, these symptoms indicate the presence of a disease or poisoning condition in the dog. For this reason, you must absolutely ensure that you learn and treat the underlying cause of these symptoms that your dog is applying to the veterinarian.

Treatment

There is no known specific method for treating chocolate poisoning in dogs. For this reason, when the veterinarian believes that the dog is poisoned with the cause of chocolate, the dog will only provide supportive treatments to keep the poisoning effects alive until the onset, that is, to prevent poisoning.
